Vera Jones is a motivational speaker, writer, award-winning television and radio broadcaster, and Syracuse University Hall-of-Fame athlete. She is most widely known for her extensive background in broadcasting, serving as a Women’s Basketball Analyst and Reporter for various networks over the past two decades including ESPN, Fox Sports, Madison Square Garden Network, and NBA-TV. She currently spends the NCAA Women’s Basketball season broadcasting for the Big Ten Network.
A naturally gifted communicator, Vera has been an on-air personality at several radio stations from New York to Florida, earning the prestigious South Carolina Broadcaster's Association "Personality of the Year" in 1994 as a Country radio morning show co-host. Other entertainment endeavours have included acting with the Paul Robeson Performing Arts Company and stand-up comedy. Her athletic endeavours have included collegiate coaching at the University of Dayton and Indiana University. Her list of corporate connections includes work for Fortune 500 Companies such as Procter & Gamble, Pulte Homes and Wells Fargo.
Grounded with diversified career and life experiences, today, as President of Vera’s VoiceWorks, LLC, Vera engages and energizes audiences across the country conducting various public speaking and leadership training forums. A single-mom with a special needs son, Vera deeply understands the personal trials of life. She is on a faith-based mission to uplift people to overcome adversity with the power of faith, unity, perseverance and purpose. Vera is the author of Play Through the Foul – Basketball Lessons for the Game of Life and New Best Friend – A Little Book of Faith. She has also co-authored The True Champions 30-Day Challenge with AJ Ali, and anticipates the release of her first children’s book, The Only Sun in Spring 2012. These literary works complement her ability to empower, enlighten and entertain audiences of all ages. Vera is quick to advise that her name means “faith” as well as “truth” and thrives to reflect those virtues in all of her inspirational writings and presentations.
A 2002 inductee into the Syracuse University Orange Plus Hall of Fame, Vera was also recognized as the 1988 Big East Women's Basketball conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She earned both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Syracuse University’s renowned Newhouse School of Public Communications. In addition to 20 years of fulfillment as a broadcasting and media professional, her diverse background has invited her to wear many other exciting hats: coach, teacher, academic advisor, trainer, sales and promotions manager, program director, writer, real estate agent, mortgage consultant, actress, and stand-up comedienne….As a communicator, she’s truly been there, done that! Using a unique and interactive blend of wit and wisdom, Vera has parlayed her wealth of personal and professional experiences, into a motivational public speaking and communications skills training career.
